OUR VALUES
Healthy food
Meals made from scratch with limited use of processed foods.
Sustainability
Food recovery, no single-use plastics, BYO plates and cutlery.
Community
A safe space for people to connect and share a meal.
Learning
A place where people can learn and/or share their cooking skills.
How will the Community Kitchen Work?
● Initially open 1 or 2 nights per week, starting with Sunday nights.
● Open to anyone in the Whistler Community. Target groups include:
o People who are looking to save money, or who are financially restricted
o Families where the primary cook may want to have a night off
o Older people who may not be able to cook for themselves or use tech to order food
o Teens interested in volunteering that can add to their resume or university application
● Meals will cost $10 per person. Having a predictable meal cost is important.
● Whistler ROCKS will be volunteer driven and will have no labour costs, however will need to incentivise volunteers to maintain their enthusiasm.
● Whistler ROCKS will pay for volunteers to complete a FoodSafe Level 1 Certificate.
● We are in conversations with Whistler Community Services Society (WCSS) and wish to complement the efforts of the existing Food Bank.
Our Next Steps
● Fundraiser on December 3rd, 4-6pm upstairs at The Hub, Athletes’ Centre, Cheakamus.
o Our goal is to raise $100,000 needed to commit to renting a space.
o By Feb 2024, the outcome of fundraising efforts will determine next steps (find a space, hold additional fundraisers, apply for additional funding, etc).
● Source food throughout Sea to Sky. Our ambition is 100% recovered food, but starting small means it’ll likely be:
o 1/3 of food through recovery from Whistler supermarkets, restaurants and caterers
o 1/3 of food through other partnerships
o 1/3 of food will need to be purchased
● Find and re-purpose commercial kitchen equipment no longer needed by Whistler restaurants and businesses.
